Engineering has always had an enormous impact on society. Bridges, roads, canals, railways, shipbuilding, docks and harbours, lighthouses and electric telegraphy revolutionized communication, while water supply, drainage, lighting, heating and ventilation revolutionized public health. New structural materials such as iron transformed the scale and form of architecture, and much of the world’s wealth came from the growth of industry made possible by the invention of the steam engine and the subsequent development of manufacturing processes. All this is reflected in a rich wealth of literature in which we specialise.

We carry books and manuscripts in many languages on all these subjects and more, from the middle of the 17th century to the end of the 19th century. They are often written in fine, clear prose by some of the world’s greatest engineers such as Telford, Smeaton, Perronet, the Stephensons, the Brunels, Roebling or Eiffel, and some are splendidly illustrated.

Elton Engineering Books is a leading dealer in this field. It was set up in 1986 by Julia Elton who was trained at B.Weinreb Architectural Books Ltd. Ben Weinreb had always been interested in engineering books as a vital concomitant to architecture and she expanded this side of his firm’s activities. Elton Engineering Books issues one to two scholarly, annotated catalogues a year, sometimes on a particular theme (“Suspension Bridges”, “The Science and Development of Materials”, “Railways”, “The Engineering of Architecture” and “Invention and Innovation”) and sometimes with a broader cross section of material from our extensive stock. We welcome customers by appointment.
